My major is Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Design, with hard work and dedication I introduced this major to my school through the Interdisciplinary studies program. At Plymouth State I studied the art of design, sustainability, innovation, and social entrepreneurship.
However I wasn't always on this unique journey of building my own major. Previously I studied environmental science and policy, while I was passionate about ESP and learning about the environment I wasn’t feeling fulfilled, as my passion and love for the arts was feeling left out and neglected. So, I decided to listen to my inner voice and figure out how to fulfill all parts of me. When I found the interdisciplinary studies department that Plymouth offered (aka buidling your own major) I knew that this was the key to really allow myself to excel by using all of my passions, and skills together. I'm very passionate about art and design and expressing oneself through it as well as being enthusiastic about the planet, our environment, preserving it, and doing all I can to live more sustainably and also help others live that way too.
The full inspiration of my major is my current small business. Where I upcycle second hand clothing and turn it into updated, and in fashion styles that are size inclusive and affordable. My hope for my small business is to close a huge gap in the fashion industry. Fast fashion is taking over due to its affordability, convenience, good taste however is detrimental to the world. But traditional "slow" sustainable fashion is very expensive, hard to find, very basic styles, and hard to care for. My small business clothes that gap by providing the same trendy styles but at an affordable cost to you and the environment.
Having this business really fulfills the entrepreneur in me, in which I've always had and been interested in. It’s in hopes that I can take what I once thought could only be a hobby into a career hopefully landing internships and jobs in big influential environmental businesses like Patagonia, Vans, Burton, etc. I’m very into the ski, snowboard, skateboard and outdoor community (given my passion for the environment) and i hope to get into sustainable design for clothing and other products and help businesses become more environmentally friendly as well as unique. I think by combining these majors it puts me in a good spot with a few advantages when trying to get into such a specific job. I also always hated the thought that school is a long term investment and that’s why my previous major left me so unfulfilled, but now with my IDS major every single class I’m taking helped me out with something I’m doing today within my business, its paying off immediately so that in itself is valuable and enough for me.
Taking and creating Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Design at Plymouth state has truly allow me to be successful at my fullest potential by pulling together all of my strongest skills, interests, and passions. A unique combination that may be rare elsewhere, but will be one that is inspiring to others, and true to me.
